By Shawn Meldrum One of the most common mistakes in marketing is making decisions based on assumptions rather than fact. You think of an idea for a marketing piece and believe that it is a great idea. You start using the idea with no tracking mechanism that would allow you to measure the results of that piece. Then if business happens to come in you assume that it must be working and continue to spend time and money on a method that may or may not actually be working. Frankly, I don't want to spend a dime (or a minute of my time) on marketing that I can't measure. There are two reasons for this. The most obvious reason is - I want to know if I am wasting my efforts on something that doesn't work at all. The second reason is - if the marketing piece is working I want to know how well. I want to be able to compare it to my other marketing efforts and determine where my resources are best spent. I also want to be able to test variations of the piece and see if I can improve the response rate. An improvement in response rate adds directly to the bottom line because it doesn't cost any extra. In other words, if I have a choice between spending $300 on an ad and getting 10 responses or spending the same $300 and getting 20 responses I'd rather have the 20 every time. That's a no-brainer, right? Yet so often I see marketers using unproven ads and neglecting to test and see if they can improve response rates. That's one reason I like using free recorded message lines as a response mechanism so much. When the person calls to hear the recorded message they enter an ID number from the ad they read. Each ad or marketing piece can be assigned a unique ID number so that I can know exactly how many responses came as a direct result of that particular piece. Knowing your numbers and tracking every single ad can save you time and money, and making decisions based on fact is much more profitable and enjoyable than making them based on assumptions. Either way, paying attention to your grooming may be the deal breaker when it comes to getting that second date. When getting ready for the first date and that, oh so important first impression, give some thought to your grooming. If you are entertaining even the possibility of a second date, slow down and pay attention. Most of us appreciate it when someone obviously takes a little time making themselves look nice for us and cares enough about themselves to have good grooming habits. Personally, Im big on nice teeth and well-groomed hands. Others have their own little quirks about what constitutes good grooming and what turns them on. Set the mood ahead of time if you think you might get lucky; candles, beverages, clean towels, clean toilet (Im tellin ya), condoms etc. Its always better to be prepared for the unexpected than to find yourself unprepared at all! If you think you might be interested in a second go-around or youre in the market for a long term relationship, you cant be too careful or attentive when it comes to the area of grooming. Mindfulness and Education: Teachers Must Make It Fun

However, its interesting to me that those who seem to be the most thoughtful and passionate proponents of mindfulness in education are the ones most likely to be trapped by their limited thinking. Now, dont get me wrong. I praise those who introduce silence, stillness and contemplation among students. I applaud those who explain the concept of mindfulness and invite their charges to explore the wonder of watching the mind in action. I celebrate the teachers who use mindfulness as an everyday word in their lessons. But why stop there? In the name of recess, field trips, and all that kids hold holy in school, cant we make mindfulness FUN? By using bells to signal silence and having kids close their eyes in order to be mindful, were sticking to the tried-and-true meditation model. Must we? Could kids settle peacefully in their chairs at the sound of a kazoo? Would they benefit from an eyes-wide-open approach to mindfulness that allows them to be active? Can they develop heightened awareness and concentration while playingwith words, music, numbers, colors, shapes, textures and smells? We learn best when were enjoying the process. Teaching kids to meditate? Great. But we are unnecessarily limiting the possibilities for greater awareness by preachinger, teachingthat meditation is the only path to paying attention. Kidslike the rest of uswant shortcuts. They love games. They remember the things that make them laugh. They pay attention to processes that allow them to be their natural creative selves. Kids see oddball connections and they are extremely resourceful when it comes to playing with even the most mundane objects and concepts. So, lets let them play. Something tells me theyd approach this differently if it were up to them. I encourage teachers to include mindfulness training in the classroom, but I urge them to release their attachment to the notion that it has to be done so SERIOUSLY. Lighten up. Mindfulness is about noticing new things, drawing distinctions, shifting perspectives, and staying fully present. It is the very essence of having fun. The truth is that its impossible to have fun UNLESS youre fully present. So, it seems to me that kids already have an innate tendency to be mindful. With a little guidance, plenty of humor, and a blast of creativity, good teachers can become great mindfulness trainers. As long as theyre having FUN. However, not all have developed that capacity or reached that level to firmly say no and mean it. Some are stuck and seem to lack the ability to consistently act on the no. Please remember that all of us are grabbed by something and find it difficult to let go. Infidelity when connected to sexual addiction and its many forms, however, becomes a powerful focal point. How to know if infidelity is attached to sexual addiction: 1. Sex takes on an inflated role or value. Sex, sexual conquest, sexual release becomes a powerful force. Acting on the sexual impulse is a frequent activity. Thinking about sex likewise consumes an inordinate amount of time. Multiple ways of acting out sexually (porn, strip clubs, multiple sex partners, etc.) are common. 2. This activity is bound by fear. The person lives with fear: the fear of getting caught, the fear of consequences, the fear of being found out, the fear of being abnormal, the fear of being punished, and the fear of losing family, spouse, job and respect. 3. A promise/failure cycle ebbs and flows with the inability to say no. After an acting out episode the person usually experiences guilt/fear and promises to self or others, I wont do it again. This will last...until the urge is acted upon again. The spouse may be aware or unaware (but sense that something is not right) of the roller coaster and succession of broken promises. 4. Others are used or seen as objects for personal gratification. No true intimacy is developed. 5. Sexuality is often confused with other needs or connected to unresolved past pain or trauma. A child who experiences confusion around sexuality or sexual abuse of one form or another, may carry along that confusion and attempt to work that through in a marriage or extramarital affairs. (I worked with one woman who used a one-night fling with a significant person to clear up a particular issue.) She was free of that urge from that point on. No one ever knew. Could she have chosen a different way? Maybe. 6. Such a person lives in a distorted world. They come to see the world and relationship through the eyes of their addiction. They have a great capacity to rationalize their behavior, deceive others and may lead a dual life. Tip: If you suspect these characteristics fit you or someone you love, get some help before your world disintegrates further or falls apart. Life can be different. Life, sexuality, a truly intimate relationship IS different. You can get there. You are stuck, and need some true love, care and guidance to arrive at the next level.
