By Michelle Yau Normally all of creativity is dedicated to running my jewelry business, Trinity London. However, in recent months, I've decided to try my hand at sewing, specifically making teddy bears. Since I only attempted any type of sewing within the past few months, I have learned many things in the process that I thought I would share.
Lesson 1a:
If you think your cat or dog sheds too much, making a stuffed animal is not for you.
Lesson 1b:
People coming into your house while you are making a teddy bear may think you have sacrificed your pets as part of a cult ritual when they see the amount of fur on the floor.
Lesson 1c:
If your significant other is not attracted to hairy chests, it's probably best to wear something over your clothes.
Lesson 1d:
Even if you bought the fur there in the first place, the people at the craft store will look at you strangely if you don't use a lint roller (or a vacuum... or just burn the clothes and change into something new entirely) before you make a quick stop at the store to pick up that one piece you are missing.
Lesson 1e:
Expect to find stray pieces of fur in odd places (i.e. - on the light switch, the curtains, the shower, etc.) as it clings to everything. Lesson 2a:
Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric makes it much easier to see where you are sewing.
Lesson 2b:
Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric is so thick that it will make your sewing machine buck like a bronco in a rodeo.
Lesson 2c:
It is easier to pierce your thumb with the eye of the needle when attempting hand sewing than it is to pierce two layers of slightly furry reversible fleece fabric with the sharp point of the needle.
Lesson 2d:
When your mother suggests using slightly furry reversible fleece fabric to make a teddy bear because it reminds her of the fabric used on bears when she was younger, pretend not to hear her while swiftly walking away from the slightly furry reversible fleece fabric. Lesson 3a:
If you didn't need to pin the section of fabric you are sewing, but it is still staying together, it is most likely on a fold and you shouldn't be sewing there.
Lesson 3b:
The person who designed the pattern put those marks on the pattern for a reason.
Lesson 3c:
It takes a lot longer to remove stitches than to sew them in the first place. Lesson 4a:
When making a jointed teddy bear, if you use plastic safety joints, be sure they are placed exactly where you want them before attaching the lock washer.
Lesson 4b:
Asking your husband to remove a safety joint after the lock washer has been attached may result in an unexpected flathead screwdriver injury.
Lesson 4c:
It is best not to laugh hysterically at your husband's unexpected flathead screwdriver injury, as he will probably not find it as humorous as you. Lesson 5:
If your cat is a bit skittish, she may impale your loved ones with her claws when she sees you walking into the room with a 2' tall stuffed grizzly bear. Lesson 6:
If you have a child, take a picture of your completed project before you show him/her because you may never see it again.
I hope you have learned a little from my lessons... not that I would have made any of those mistakes myself. When she is not making disastrous attempts at sewing, Michelle Yau is the owner of Trinity London, a jewelry business specializing in awareness ribbon bracelets, rosary bracelets, and other handcrafted beaded jewelry. William Baffin Climbing Rose
By Alan Summers Dramatically Change Your Garden with a Climbing Rose There is no investment, for less money, that will so dramatically change the appearance of a garden or landscape than a properly placed climbing rose. You can probably recall any number of beautiful magazine images of sunny, rose-covered arbors or a rose-covered lattice framing at a home's front door. Climbing roses are extremely versatile garden performers. You can choose to let them artfully climb vertical structures, leisurely tumble over a picket fence or carefully train them on horizontal fence rails to create a narrow hedge. This week we are featuring a climbing rose - William Baffin - the most reliable of all the medium to deep pink climbers. William Baffin, a Canadian developed variety that is just about the best of the renowned Explorer series of roses, has been proven in thousands of gardens over many seasons for its colorful reblooming, low maintenance requirements, excellent disease resistance, unusual cold hardiness and salt tolerance. You will be rewarded with big color from clusters of up to 30, double, strawberry-pink 2 1/2 inch blooms that are moderately fragrant. Clusters of small orangeed hips follow in the autumn and remain into winter, until relished by the local bird population. Beautiful, glossy, green foliage that is totally resistant to diseases, acts as a backdrop for the blooms. William Baffin matures at 10-15 feet, making it ideal for a trellis or arbor. Although bred in Ontario Canada, William Baffin performs equally well as far south as Florida. Planting and Care For best results plant in the fall or spring. Fall planting works particularly well with William Baffin. Plant in full sun for best blooms, but will tolerate partial shade. Plant in well-drained, compost enriched soil. Mulch well the first winter. Pruning and shaping, when necessary, should be accomplished after the initial spring bloom. Fertilize with Rose-Tone monthly from early spring until late summer. Hardy in Zones 4-9. Alan Summers, president of Carroll Gardens, Inc., has over 30 years experience in gardening and landscape design. He has made Carroll Gardens one of Americas preeminent nurseries, having introduced more than 20 new perennials and woody shrubs over the years and reintroduced numerous lost cultivars back to American gardeners. How to Maximize Your Time While Dating and Find the Relationship You Really Want
By Janice D. Bennett, Ph.D. Are you someone who wants a committed relationship, but somehow yours dont end up heading in that direction? Heres some investment advice to help you overcome this dilemma: Q. I continually seem to get into relationships that appear great on the surface (good communication, affection, chemistry, healthy love life, fun, mutual love), but suddenly the guy needs space or wants out completely. They still profess their love, affections and passions, but they want out. I am 40 and my significant others tend to be close to my age or a few years older. The relationships have lasted anywhere from 9 months to 3 years. Any ideas? Donna A. Yes, Donna, I have plenty of ideas, the most important of which is recognizing that this dating dilemma can be avoided before a relationship takes on a life of its own. What I mean is this: rather than feeling like a victim of a mans need for space, you have the power to decide, long before getting further involved, if the relationship is to head towards an exclusive, committed relationship (i.e., marriage), or not. I advocate that the decision to invest more time with a dating partner be made before the fifth date. Thats because people can spend one to three years of their valuable time dating someone before deciding, This is not a good relationship for me. But if you sit down earlier on to talk about the direction you want your relationship to head, i.e., a committed relationship or marriage, then this is when to say so. Based on the outcome of your discussion, you can then decide if you want to become exclusive and invest more time in the relationship. Because I keep hearing about the many commitment-phobes lurking out there, the decision to become exclusive is hence a "pre-commitment. I actually like to call it a commitment to see if we should make a commitment, which I find takes the edge off of making bigger commitments, like deciding to move in together, or get engaged. Dating and communicating in this more cognizant way will help you determine earlier on if your relationship is headed in the direction you want it to. You then have the power to choose whether or not to invest more of your time. Otherwise, youll be in the same water together, but swimming different strokes. Q. I am in a relationship with a woman now for about a year and a half. Both of us come from long, destructive marriages. I feel I am ready to get married, but she says that she's not ready. She says she wants to get to know herself better. I love and adore her and am doing my best to be patient, but Im also fearful that she may never want to marry. What should I do? Steven A. You are in a similar situation as Donna you have invested 1-1/2 years of your time in a relationship that you wanted to lead to marriage, while your girlfriend has instead spent this time with a different goal. The goal, to know herself better, is clearly not something that can be accomplished within the relationship. So you now have to decide if you should invest an additional, unknown amount of time until she is ready to share your goal of marriage. Ive used the term invest in both of my answers here to mean the following: To spend or devote for future advantage or benefit. Like investing money in stocks, bonds or savings accounts, you do so with the expectation that you will receive a specific benefit or profit after a certain period of time. The only currency that singles have in their search for a life partner is time. While investing time is a necessary component in choosing a partner, time can also be wasted if you invest too much of it with someone who isnt headed in the same direction as you. Singles will instead stick around and invest more of their time, hoping that by doing so the other person will eventually change and the investment will pay off. Referring back to the money analogy, this is akin to throwing good money after bad, i.e., investing more money in a failure, or repairing an already poor product. Having said all this, I dont recommend that you stick around and invest any more of your valuable time while your girlfriend embarks on the completely diverse, singular goal of knowing herself better. I suggest you tell her again that you want to marry her, and after being together for 1-1/2 years, you have enough information about each other to get engaged. If she continues to say that her goal is self-knowledge, then you should find someone to invest your time with who shares your goal of marriage. Expecting you to stick around while she pursues her separate goal would be akin to stealing your time. Again, using the time-as-money analogy, this is comparable to stealing money that you could spend on other (more promising) investments. If she eventually determines that she knows herself well enough to accept your proposal, then you have the choice to return to the relationship or not. After all, only you can decide how to spend your money, and your time. Copyright 2005 Janice D. Bennett, Ph.D. About Janice D. Child Safety Products for Kitchens
By Milos Pesic The kitchen is the second most unsafe place in the house for your child. And as much as you want to keep him out of the kitchen, there will be times that his curiosity will get the better of him. Curiosity killed the cat. Admittedly, children are naturally nosey. Their minds are filled with whys and hows and oftentimes, when you are too busy to feed them with answers, they are going to look for those themselves. The kitchen has a lot of interesting things in it. It wouldnt come as a surprise when you see him wander there several times. His inquisitive nature may seem cute, but it wont be for long. How long before he gets his hands on a kitchen knife or on a box of matches? Dont wait for him to discover things for himself. Invest on child safety products for kitchens. The market nowadays has been flooded with products that scream child-friendly. Almost all parents shop for things that will not, in any way, pose risk to their children. Child-proofing your house takes a lot of preparation and a genuine concern for the well-being of your child. It is advisable to start the process with the most dangerous parts of the house like the bathroom and the kitchen. There are several child safety products for kitchens that you can use for your child-proofing. For example, it would be best to use unbreakable plates and glasses, especially for your childs own table ware. Other child safety products for kitchens are the cabinet drawers and locks. Forget convenience and think about safety. These cabinets are the safest places to store things like knives, scissors, and matches. Make sure that you keep them locked so your child wont have access to them. If you have the habit of leaving something to cook in the oven, make sure that you have an oven lock. This is one of the child safety products for kitchens which is very important because your child could get seriously hurt if he tries to open the oven while somethings cooking. Child safety products for kitchens are not meant to replace adult supervision in the kitchen. The most sensible thing to do is to keep them out of the kitchen if no adult is there with them. Even if your have bought child safety products for kitchens like the stove and burner guards, stove knob covers, and cabinet latches, they do not guarantee that your child is safe when left alone in the kitchen. Thus, it would be a good idea to use safety gates to stop them from wandering off into the kitchen. Unless theyre old enough to cook dinner, kitchen is not the place for them to be. New Shingles Vaccine Promoted by Government Advisory Panel
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Edwards] Tim Edwards A government advisory panel recommended to an FDA advisory panel that routine vaccinations should be put into place in order to protect older citizens from the threat of shingles. The Advisory Committee on immunizations voted to recommend routine vaccinations in patients 60 and older. Shingles is a painful skin rash which produces blisters which usually go away after 4 weeks. One in 5 of seniors that contract shingles suffer excruciating long-term nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia. According to MSNBC.com, Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. An estimated 15 percent to 30 percent of people infected with the virus develop shingles later in life. The virus essentially hibernates for decades in nerve cells around the spine. It reactivates in some patients, probably because the bodys immune system weakens with age, doctors say. The recent FDA approval was based on a study that involved 19,000 out of 38,000 people which received the vaccine, the rest received a placebo. People who received the real vaccine got shingles at half the rate of those who received the placebo vaccine. The vaccine which is produced by Merck, is a stronger version of a vaccine currently used to treat chickenpox. The vaccine is currently covered by some insurance health plans however coverage is expected to grow with the recent FDA approval. The vaccine costs around a $160 a shot. Hopefully this will remedy the majority of problems expirienced by seniors that are affected by shingles. Warning Signs
By Terry Coyier When you suffer from a disease like Bipolar it's extremely important that you become intimately in tune with yourself. Not in sense that your favorite movie is "Steel Magnolias" or "Raging Bull" or that you love pizza and taking long walks on the beach. I mean in the sense that you know how your moods manifest in your day-to-day life.Being bipolar and trying to remain a contributing member of society is a difficult task. Many wonderful, talented, bright people watch helplessly as their functionality escapes through their fingers like grains of sand. And these are people who are on meds! Some even go to therapy, too! Sometimes, the more we fight to hang on the quicker the ground gives way beneath us.One tactic I attribute to remaining somewhat functional for the past 7 years is acute awareness of my early warning signs. It works just like the emergency broadcast system except without the annoying beep! It gets tested regularly to make sure it's still relevant and it's there in case of an emergency. It even has an emergency number to call...the one that rings my psychiatrist. Now, when I say early warning signs, I mean EARLY! Not things like "I've been crying for days and don't know why" or "I went out and spent $5000.00 on a new television but didn't pay the electric bill." Those are examples of symptoms of an ensuing episode. It may end up being minor, but it's better to catch the signs long before this stage. The signs I'm talking about are infinitely subtler. They require a magnifying glass to properly identify. No one can tell you for sure what yours are, but some close friends or relatives may be able to point out some behavior patterns that qualify. I also recognize more than just the early signs. Intermediate signs can play an important roll if the early signs don't show themselves or get ignored. Here are some samples of my signs:Early Warnings1. I start to see shadows or movement out of the corner of my eye, but when I turn and look there is nothing. I usually think I saw a bug or spider and I HATE bugs and spiders.2. I am unable to pick out clothes without standing in the closet and staring for 10 minutes at a time. Then, out of frustration, I leave, only to return again 10 minutes later to start the cycle again. Some days it's okay to do this, but if goes on for more than 3 days it's a warning sign for me.3. One occurrence of staying up all night. I am a big sleeper and this is a huge no-no for me!4. While screening my calls (which I normally do anyway) if I don't pick up when my friends call, that's definitely a sign. UNLESS I'm taking a nap and then it doesn't count!5. Waking up more than once in the middle of the night or waking up and not being able to get back to sleep so I get on the computer instead. Once is okay, twice is a phone call to my doctor!6. Not wanting to read bedtime stories to my son. This is a special time and if I'm not in the mood, then my mood is out of whack!Intermediate Warning Signs1. When I hear people talking and assume it's about me and how fat, ugly, mean, stupid, etc. I am; then I'm on the way to the phone!2. Not wanting to shower at least every other day. Hey, I don't sweat and I just sit at the computer, so I don't think it hurts to skip a day here and there!3. Staring out the window for 10-15 minutes at a time, yet not seeing anything or even realizing that I'm doing it.4. Taking over the conversation no matter who I'm talking to at that moment or even who they're talking to at the moment.5. Wanting to go to the mall. Not actually going, just thinking about going is enough. Sounds silly doesn't it? For me it means I want to spend money and I don't have much disposable income. Plus, I'm not real fond of shopping. Even when I need something I still don't like to go!Most of these things have to happen a few times over a period of a couple days to count as a true sign. Usually a couple will occur together and then there is no doubt. As soon as I'm leery I call my psychiatrist and he will adjust my dosage of medicines. Sometimes he will quiz me about my diet and fluid intake as well and correct it if necessary. (He's smart enough not to eliminate my chocolate though!) If I'm getting into multiple intermediate signs then I will even go in for a visit. My sanctity is worth it!I have a responsibility to myself to remain as healthy as possible. It's hard to do if you don't know when you're becoming unstable. And I can't wait until I'm into a full-blown episode because a darling angel depends on me. So I do it for him, too. But mostly I do it because I like myself more when I can think rationally. So, let's do our best to stay healthy and be kind to ourselves as we struggle through the torment of this debilitating disease together! Terry J. Coyier is a 37-year-old college student studying for an Associates of Applied Sciences degree. She is also a freelance writer who writes about bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. How to Catch Bass Fish Successfully Every Time
By Balajee Bashyaam Bass fishing is an enthralling sport. Every one will aspire to come out successfully in any sport or game. To be a good angler one should know the information that is discussed below. Depth of the water Any water body will have three layers. They are deep layer, middle layer and surface layer. The surface layer will be warmer than the middle layer and the middle layer will be warmer than the deep layer. Before heading for the bass fishing you need to know the existence of the three layers and should be able to find out the temperature of the three layers. Thermometers can be used effectively to measure the temperature of the different layers of water. Bass fish prefers comfortable temperature. Hence in hot weather condition the bass fish will remain in the deep layer as it will be cold. During cold weather condition the bass fish will try to remain in the middle or top layer. Temperature of the water The metabolism of the bass fish is influenced by temperature of the water. There is no second opinion that bass fish can withstand temperature fluctuations better. Bass fishing can be done thorough out the year when the temperature of the water is around 70 -75 degree Celsius. The bass fishing is possible even when the temperature is around 32-39 degree Celsius. When the temperature of the water becomes cold the movement of the bass fish is getting slower. This piece of information will help the anglers immensely to get big booty of bass fish. Clarity of the water Bass can survive well in both clear and murky water. Bass fish tries to remain in the deeper water for most of the time. They tend to come to the top layer only for feeding and reproduction. Male fish remain near the nest and does the protection job. The male bass fish will enter in to the fight with any intruder who comes near the nest with the aim of destroying or eating. If the water is clear and calm, good deep water bass fishing is possible. If the water is cloudy which means a lot activity in all three layers, the bass fishing will be difficult. Noise or vibration or other disturbances Bass fishes are highly sensitive to vibration and noises. Hence you need to keep the place as quite as possible. Any kind of noise will scare away the bass fish. It is better to reach the selected place without much of disturbance to the water and stay put and goes for deep water bass fishing. Time of the day, effect of sunlight and color or the prey Experienced anglers feel that dawn and the dusk are the best time for successful bass fishing. The best feeding time for the bass fish is dawn and dusk. The bass can be lured with the live or artificial bait at this time. The noon time is not at all suited for bass fishing because the bass stop feeding and go deep in the water in search of cooler place. The bass fish are more attracted by the light colored fast moving prey. you can use light colored bait that moves fast or create vibrations, your chances of making the bass fish to strike and get hooked is bright. However bass fishing can go on in other times also. The success depends on your strategy in attracting the bass fish to strike and get caught. Change of season, time and other things There are various opinions as far as best season for successful bass fishing is concerned. Some feel that fall of season is the best time for bass fishing. The season is not going to be the same all through the year. There are so many other things like sun light, water movement, speed of water, direction of the flow etc. also change. There is no fixed time and season for bass fishing. Bass fishing can be done successfully even during severe cold season [ice fishing] provided you also change your strategy and technique in line with the changes in the season climate and other things The nature and the habitat of the bass fish Try and know as much as possible about the nature and habitat of the bass fish. This can be achieved by reading the related articles and discussing with the seasoned anglers. Once you are thorough with the nature and habitat of the fish you can successfully select the place for bass fishing. Once the place is selected thinking in the lines of bass fish will increase you chance of enjoying a successful bass fishing Map Knowing preferred habitats of the bass fish is possible though the map that contains the complete details of the place selected for the bass fishing. You need to find and select a map that has even minute details like length, depth and slope of the surface of the water body. The bass prefers to stay at deep waters. Once you know the depth and the surface detail of the water body you can select the place for bass fishing more accurately. Deep lake with a slope floor is the best place to look for bass fish. Tooth Whitening - Do Over The Counter Products Work?
By Sarah Wright When it comes to tooth whitening, the best option is nearly always to go see your dentist. They have the quickest and most effective methods for achieving whiter teeth. However, many people cant afford the expensive professional treatments, or theyre just plain scared to go to the dentist. Because of this, millions of people each year are turning to over-the-counter whitening products. Although many of these treatments clearly arent going to be as effective as the expensive option of seeing your dentist, independent tests and studies have proven many of these over-the-counter products to work to some degree. So its definitely an option worth following if you want whiter teeth. Some of the over-the-counter tooth whitening products even contain the same chemicals as professional treatment. Carbamide is the chemical most often used in professional treatment, and some of the better over-the-counter products. But a more commonly used chemical in the over-the-counter products is hydrogen peroxide. One of the advantages to over-the-counter whitening products is that they are fairly cheap. You can get yourself everything you need for around $30 or less. This means its a lot cheaper than going to the dentist, which can run into hundreds of dollars. However, there are some serious draw backs to using over-the-counter products. The main one being that some people arent suited for tooth whitening treatments. The primary reason is that your teeth may have cavities, and other problems that will cause you a lot of painful sensitivity if you were to use a home whitening kit. Also, you have no way of knowing the strength of the whitening chemicals used. This means you dont have any control over how sensitive your teeth will feel. A professional dentist will be able to vary the dosage according to your teeth sensitivity. Another problem that you may have if you use a dental tray is that the tray doesnt cover your teeth properly. This can make it very obvious that youve tried to whiten your teeth, because parts of your teeth will be whiter, while other parts will be left untreated. If you were to have a professional treatment, you can have this tray customized so it fits perfectly. Sarah Wright is owner of the
